Ten Recent Google algorithm changes

  • Cross-language information retrieval updates: For queries in languages where limited web content is available (Afrikaans, Malay, Slovak, Swahili, Hindi, Norwegian, Serbian, Catalan, Maltese, Macedonian, Albanian, Slovenian, Welsh, Icelandic), we will now translate relevant English web pages and display the translated titles directly below the English titles in the search results. This feature was available previously in Korean, but only at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the translated titles will take you to pages translated from English into the query language.
  • Snippets with more page content and less header/menu content: This change helps us choose more relevant text to use in snippets. As we improve our understanding of web page structure, we are now more likely to pick text from the actual page content, and less likely to use text that is part of a header or menu.
  • Better page titles in search results by de-duplicating boilerplate anchors: We look at a number of signals when generating a page’s title. One signal is the anchor text in links pointing to the page. We found that boilerplate links with duplicated anchor text are not as relevant, so we are putting less emphasis on these. The result is more relevant titles that are specific to the page’s content.
  • Length-based autocomplete predictions in Russian: This improvement reduces the number of long, sometimes arbitrary query predictions in Russian. We will not make predictions that are very long in comparison either to the partial query or to the other predictions for that partial query. This is already our practice in English.
  • Extending application rich snippets: We recently announced rich snippets for applications. This enables people who are searching for software applications to see details, like cost and user reviews, within their search results. This change extends the coverage of application rich snippets, so they will be available more often.
  • Retiring a signal in Image search: As the web evolves, we often revisit signals that we launched in the past that no longer appear to have a significant impact. In this case, we decided to retire a signal in Image Search related to images that had references from multiple documents on the web.
  • Fresher, more recent results: As we announced just over a week ago, we’ve made a significant improvement to how we rank fresh content. This change impacts roughly 35 percent of total searches (around 6-10% of search results to a noticeable degree) and better determines the appropriate level of freshness for a given query.
  • Refining official page detection: We try hard to give our users the most relevant and authoritative results. With this change, we adjusted how we attempt to determine which pages are official. This will tend to rank official websites even higher in our ranking.
  • Improvements to date-restricted queries: We changed how we handle result freshness for queries where a user has chosen a specific date range. This helps ensure that users get the results that are most relevant for the date range that they specify.
  • Prediction fix for IME queries: This change improves how Auto-complete handles IME queries (queries which contain non-Latin characters). Auto-complete was previously storing the intermediate keystrokes needed to type each character, which would sometimes result in gibberish predictions for Hebrew, Russian and Arabic.

Google Update 2011: Next to Panda: Giving you fresher, more recent search results

Google announced they are rolling out a new search algorithm change that helps make the search results “fresher.” The big news here is that besides for the results being fresher, the results will change for about 35% of all searches.

Now Google changed their search algorithm to show fresher results, fresher than ever before.

That is larger than the Panda Update which impacted 12% of the searches conducted.

What type of searches does it impact? Google said:
  • Recent events or hot topics. For recent events or hot topics that begin trending on the web, you want to find the latest information immediately. Now when you search for current events like [occupy oakland protest], or for the latest news about the [nba lockout], you’ll see more high-quality pages that might only be minutes old.
  • Regularly recurring events. Some events take place on a regularly recurring basis, such as annual conferences like [ICALP] or an event like the [presidential election]. Without specifying with your keywords, it’s implied that you expect to see the most recent event, and not one from 50 years ago. There are also things that recur more frequently, so now when you’re searching for the latest [NFL scores], [dancing with the stars] results or [exxon earnings], you’ll see the latest information.
  • Frequent updates. There are also searches for information that changes often, but isn’t really a hot topic or a recurring event. For example, if you’re researching the [best slr cameras], or you’re in the market for a new car and want [subaru impreza reviews], you probably want the most up to date information.

Google Ads at the bottom of the Search page

November 02, 2011 - We’ve been seeing tests for months, and this week Google officially announced it would begin serving AdWords at the bottom of search engine results pages on Google.com. Interestingly, the company says that, in tests, the ads at the bottom performed better than those on the side of the page.

Google says ads at the bottom fit “better into the user’s flow as they scan the page from top to bottom.”

Tool: Google Analytics URL Builder

Fill the information in the form below and click the Generate URL button.

If you're new to tagging links or this is your first time using this tool, read http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55518

If your Google Analytics account has been linked to an active AdWords account, there's no need to tag your AdWords links - auto tagging will do it for you automatically.
URL Builder is not for your web site, it's for the marketing of your web site. For example, you have a particular banner on a particular 3rd party site. By using URL Builder GA will be able to better track the incoming traffic from that particular banner on that particular site. Without it, you would just see traffic coming from that site without being able to attribute it to a specific banner. If you have more than one banner on that 3rd party site then the use of URL Builder becomes even more important.

What is Google's Quality Rater

Google employs so-called quality raters. These are the people who manually check Google's search results to make sure that the ranking algorithm is working as expected.

A quality rater visits the sites that Google returns for a query and then evaluates the results based on relevance. If a website does not fit in the search results, Google's quality raters can mark a website as spam.

The quality rater handbook contains the guidelines that quality raters use to evaluate web pages.

Although Google quickly removed the link to the handbook after it leaked, we could take a look at it.

Here are the most important takeaways from the quality rater handbook:

Google Webmaster Tool Will signal You on Duplicate Content Issues Across Your Domain

Today, Google webmaster tools has launched a new message alert to let site owners know when a particular URL doesn’t appear because Google sees it as duplicate of a URL on a different domain.
To be transparent about cross-domain URL selection decisions, we’re launching new Webmaster Tools messages that will attempt to notify webmasters when our algorithms select an external URL instead of one from their website. The details about how these messages work are in our Help Center article about the topic, and in this blog post we’ll discuss the different scenarios in which you may see a cross-domain URL selection and what you can do to fix any selections you believe are incorrect.

In this situation, please follow our guidance on cleaning your site and submit a reconsideration request when done. To identify cloaked attacks, you can use the Fetch as Googlebot function in Webmaster Tools to see your page’s content as Googlebot sees it.

How will this change impact Google Analytics users?

When a signed in user visits your site from an organic Google search, all web analytics services, including Google Analytics, will continue to recognize the visit as Google “organic” search, but will no longer report the query terms that the user searched on to reach your site. Keep in mind that the change will affect only a minority of your traffic. Google Software engineer accidentally publishes internal letter to the public: Interesting Read

“Google+ is a knee-jerk reaction, a study in short-term thinking, predicated on the incorrect notion that Facebook is successful because they built a great product. But that’s not why they are successful. Facebook is successful because they built an entire constellation of products by allowing other people to do the work.

Google Sitelinks - Latest Updates

Last month, Google announced new and extended sitelinks. The maximum number of sitelinks increased from eight to 12:

Last month With Google's new sitelinks, the meta description tag becomes more important.
Google generates the sitelinks for your website based on your website navigation and based on the links that point to your website.

How to make your sitelinks more attractive

Google uses the first 30-35 characters of the meta description tag of a web page for the snippets.
To increase the number of clicks on the snippets, you should optimize your meta description tags:
  • The first 35 characters in the meta description tag should contain a clear description of the page and/or a call-to-action.
  • Each page of your website should have its own meta description.
Note that Google updates the sitelinks of a website periodically. It may take some time before the new descriptions of your web pages appear in the sitelinks.
How to get sitelinks

In general, Google shows sitelinks if it is sure that a website is the exact match for a search query (usually product name or company name searches). Google generates the sitelinks for your website based on your website navigation and based on the links that point to your website.
If Google does not show sitelinks for your website then you should work on your website navigation:
  • Avoid JavaScript and Flash navigation and try to use regular links as often as possible.
  • If you use images for your website navigation, make sure that the images contain alternative texts that allow Google to categorize your links.
Do not use too many navigation links and make it easy for web surfers and search engines to find out which pages of your website are the most important pages. The better a web page is linked, the more likely it is that it will appear in the sitelinks on Google.

Google says that valid HTML code is a quality signal

July 18, 2011 - Webmasters are not sure about the importance of valid HTML code. Some think that it is very important while other say that it doesn't matter. Last week, Google said that valid HTML code is a quality signal:

"Why does validation matter? There are different perspectives on validation—at Google there are different approaches and priorities too—but the Webmaster Team considers validation a baseline quality attribute. It doesn't guarantee accessibility, performance, or maintainability, but it reduces the number of possible issues that could arise and in many cases indicates appropriate use of technology.
While paying a lot of attention to validation, we've developed a system to use it as a quality metric to measure how we're doing on our own pages. Here's what we do: we give each of our pages a score from 0-10 points, where 0 is worst (pages with 10 or more HTML and CSS validation errors) and 10 is best (0 validation errors). We started doing this more than two years ago, first by taking samples, now monitoring all our pages."

SEM is not only for Adwords - Think Beyond the Line

Most of the people misunderstand and confuse the concept of SEM and they insists that SEM activities only involves Adwords. Actually, the fact is, its just a single part of SEM. But most of the people are not aware of this fact and they think of an Ocean as a Small Pool.

Before explaining the fact, we have to understand what SEO and SEM meant for.

SEO is a bunch of un-paid activities carried out to improve the visibility of your websites in web search engines and in SERP Pages as it is the process of improving value and volume of preferred traffic towards the website from search results of various search engines for targeted key phrases or keywords.

SEM on the other hand involves the sum of paid as well as unpaid Search Engine based/related Online Marketing and Advertising activities as its motto is increasing the web traffic, increasing conversions and taking online actions that leads to a purchase of the product/service.

SEM activities

Social Media Marketing - Its recognized as a higher level of SEM.

Adwords

Contextual Advertising

Paid Inclusions/Paid Link Submissions

Traditional Ads

Banner Ads

Article Marketing

Geo Targeting - You can as well apply Geo Targeting in your SEM activities even though it falls under SEO.

Email Marketing - Most of the people think that it is not a SEM Activity. But actually it is. It is a SEM method that involves the sending out of properly worded marketing mails.

Press Release

Blog Marketing - Based on the concept it will also falls under the SEM activities.

................................. etc.

SEM involves much more and I am also not remindful about its activities as a whole. SEO and SEM are both a Ocean in the Online Marketing World and We are just learning a part of it.

Blackberry BING Partnership - A New Surprised Move of MSN

On May 3rd, 2011, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and RIM President Mike Lazaridis announces a new business concern between Microsoft and RIM to bring forward Bing search in BlackBerry/RIM devices, at RIM's BlackBerry World conference. As well, those two Technology Giants decided to work in collaboration to market and boost the corresponding offerings of each other

Consequently, new BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook tablet will default to making use of Bing conductive to its default search and mapping. Gossips are there that Bing will render its services for Search, Maps, Voice Search, Location-Aware Search, and Panorama Stitching.

Matt Dahlin, a director at Bing, wrote on the Bing Blog:

For us, this goes way beyond a “search box” and links that rank URLs representing a set of web documents. For us, it’s about finding real tools that help real people get things done. Bing is about fast decisions, combining the topical graph with your social graph – as well as the geospatial graph – to connect the real world and the digital universe like never before. Doing this on mobile devices of all sorts is incredibly important to this effort, and our work with RIM will help both companies do great things for customers.
“Bing will actually create real value,” Ballmer explained, but not just as a search option, as it turns out. Bing will also be deeply integrated into BlackBerry experience itself, he said. It will be deeply integrated into the BlackBerry OS itself. “This  goes way beyond search box,” Ballmer said. “It’s about real tools that help real people get things done.”

The standing fact is Microsoft desires to kick BING upstairs, as it is an important weapon for MSN in opposition to Google. With the support of massive ads and advancements altogether with routine improvements and new specialities, the BING Decision Engine is gradually execute its initiations to take particularly US market share from Google.

Google and its +1 Feature - An added value for your Web Presence

It resembles FaceBook's Like Button and a kind of Social Bookmarking activity i.e., "recommending specific search results to others by clicking the button".

This +1 Button will have a certain level of impact on Ad CTRs, as well.

Google has taken its search engine results to a new social level with the launch of a new feature that will allow signed-up users to recommend content and even ads.
As there are so many factors for SERP in Google's Algorithm, it might be an additional factor that influencing the ranking process in point of Organic SEO.

But, I am not sure whether a site could fall from its position only for the reason it is not '+1'd.

The main motto of Google by introducing this feature falls under, Quality Site Content and an additional inclusion of Social Aspect like Google Buzz.
Google faced privacy criticisms last year when it launched Buzz, a social networking messaging product that automatically revealed people's personal contact lists to the public.

Matt Cutts said that Google hoped to address any potential privacy concerns with the +1 service by making it clear that any +1 tags are public.
There is another concern for Google that is,

To use the new recommendation system, users must create a Google Profile page. Any +1 clicks that a person makes will be publicly visible to their network of contacts, which is based on existing contacts in Google products such as the company's Gmail email and its instant messaging service.
Few Industry experts conveys that Initially Google will experiment this +1 factor in US by adding a small button next to Google SERP result of the Websites and PPC Ads. So the thing we need to do is clicking that button and then those +1s will be appeared next to the search results of that +1d website.

Google Algorithm Update concerning to Site Content - 2011

In 2010, Google give importance to Site Speed and Loading Time. Now Google turn its eye on Duplicate Content issues. As per Matt Cutts Statement Google does multiple changes in their Algorithm and the main concern is Website Content and it's originality. That modification was commended at their weekly quality launch meeting on 20th Jan 2011 and launched after a week.

This launch will certainly get some definite impacts on SERPs. The motto of this launch to make available the most informative and original contents to the searchers. The filters fixed for duplicate content will be more stiffened. Google implied more strict techniques to find out the duplicate content in its SERPs. So as a end result, the content will be more fresh, updates and informative as consequently increases the credibility.
So be aware of your search engine rankings. Check regularly. And if you come to know any downward flow in Keyword rankings verify your content. and try to find out identify whether any other sites have having your content.
Unfortunately your top ranking site gone down in Google rankings and chances are there that duplicate content is part of the problem. That fallen ranking is consequently a end result of your content might be in some other site and Google started thinking that the other site is the original and yours is duplicate. Regrettably, in such circumstances it can be better to modify or put a new content and get back the results.
Even if your site is legitimate, but using lot of repeating keywords and you are watching your site going down on the SERPs, you may be hesitant to make broad sweeping changes to your site. In that case, reduce the percentage of spammy content on your site. Avoiding the spammy and similar content in small and watch out how Google responds to your changes before fixed for a more global approach.
