Subdomains and Subdirectories – They are two completely disparate strategies for structuring root domains. Here in my article, I’m going to explain how beneficial they’re when it comes to SEO. But before that it will be good if you understand what they are. 

Let’s understand about Subdomain and Subdirectory

A subdomain a part that come along with your main domain name. For example, it looks like xyz.domainname.com. As stated in the example, 'xyz' denoting the subdomain, ‘domainname’ denoting the main domain and ‘.com’ denoting the top level domain (TLD). The purpose of Subdomains is to create an organized or structured navigation to different categories of your website. We can create many subdomains or child domains on the main domain.

According to Dictionary, a Subdirectory is "a directory below another directory in a hierarchy". It is a hierarchical trail within the website and intersection point of the domain or subdomain. It will be like domainname.com/xyz. In this example, 'xyz' is the subdirectory.

Are they really beneficial for SEO

Subdomains are helping you to streamline your website information to make your website visitors discover the information they’re looking into your website. Subsequently, it improves your site's SEO performance. It will be beneficial for companies having multilingual websites, cross domain sites, having operations in different locations, having different brands, different products, multiple services, mobile-based sites, and so on.

On the other hand, there are other controversies about subdomains that there is chance of search engine penalization if we use subdomains on our website. And also, there is a thought that bots will identify these subdomains as separate sites that is a completely different from your main domain and due to that your main domain won’t benefit from your subdomain.

The Subdirectory concept gives your root domain a better domain authority and drives your website towards better search engine ranking and streamlining website management. Keyword included subdirectory names not only make your site user-friendly, but also notifies your key pages to search engines like Google. They’re most beneficial for small and medium level businesses to have better user experience and brand awareness. 

The disadvantage with subdirectory is if you go much deeper by increasing the number of subdirectories, then it will become clumsy for both users and search engines.
