Siloing Strategy – to rank well for both common and targeted keywords

Siloing is nothing but architecturally structuring the website to get the Search Engines to recognize your site for your targeted keywords. It will let the Search Engines to consider you as the subject matter expert.

What is Silo?

“A silo is a vertical page linking design. You have your landing page, or your main page, at the top of the silo and underneath this page you have pages which support your main landing page theme.”

What is Siloing Content?

If you have your keyword silos/themes in place, you’re already on your way to writing your themed content. Each page on your site should have a theme and discuss a specific topic. This content should be optimized for the assigned keywords. Using this method allows you to craft content themes around your keywords and this helps make these pages/sections of your site more relevant and authoritative.

What is a Keyword silo?

Before you even write one piece of content, you should take a step back and create silos, or themes, for your keywords. If you are going to create highly-relevant content with targeted keywords, you first need a plan as to where each of your keywords will go. After conducting your keyword research, go ahead and group your keywords according to topic/theme.

What are Directory silos?

You can use your site architecture to split your site into multiple themes. This method is also called directory silos. This tactic groups like content pages into a tightly organized and themed directory within your site.

There are several ways to create silos:

1) Tagging
2) Categories
3) Directories
4) Related pages plugin
5) ONLY link to landing pages using your Target keyword.
6) Create a mini-sitemap on each page within your silo.

What are the steps involved in it?

1. Create Categories that are deeply focused
2. Treat each Category along with co-coordinating sub pages as separate web pages.
3. Begin internal linking: Link category content pages to one another.
4. Start backlinking: Each silo or category/sub 4 category niche receives its own backlinking campaign.

Silo for Root Domain- Tips (i.e.,

1. All the blog categories must be similar or identical to your web site silo categories. Google can analyze all your content quickly and will reward you for it.
2. Link your blog posts to your main site pages. Link to the Homepage, silo pages and corresponding content pages.
3. Link blog static pages to blog posts.
4. Do deep link and do change the anchor text.
5. Try to stick to one link per 100 words on your blog posts.
6. Link posts to other posts.

Blog Silo

1. The standard silo landing page is replaced by static blog pages. Related content is assigned to the representing page.
2. Individual blot posts gain exposure and traffic and pass the increased page rank to each blog page.

Expected Outcomes:

1) Higher rankings
2) Increase in overall traffic
3) More unique visitors
4) More traffic from long tail keywords.

The goal of these strategies is to create a site that is theme-focused, keyword-relevant, search engine friendly, and user friendly. An added benefit is that Siloing will appeal to both your users and bots.

Why do search engines have problems with dynamic websites

1. Dynamic web page does not exist when search engine Robots are reading the pages.

2. The search engine Robots usually do not read character such as "?", "%", "$" "#", "&", "*", "!"

3. Search engines usually consider dynamic Website as never ending links.

4. Search engines robots will get stock in an infinite loop specially if the dynamic page has Session ID

5. As all the pages is generated through database, a dynamic page does not exist as a file on a hosting server, as a static html page does until the request comes for a page, when a crawler comes to the website, does not get that pages to crawl every time, so crawler avoid those pages next time to crawl.

6. Database generated pages URL is called dynamic URLs, dynamic URL is not easy to read by human as well as search engine spiders.

7. Dynamic site can dramatically reduce your visibility in the search engines. Even though some engines spider dynamic URLs, others still do not. Those that do spider them may still place artificial limits on how deep they will travel within such links.

8. Typically such pages have a question mark (?) in the URL (or not). When a search engine crawler arrives at such a page, it captures the content but halts immediately, and will not follow the links, because it sees ahead of it an infinite number of pages.

9. Even after you make these changes, there will still be time-outs (search engines time-out quickly), and the code is usually poorly written for the search engine spiders. The pages are usually all one template, making it difficult to add keywords and to modify each page for keyword frequency.

10. If you create a static doorway page with a no follow tag, you will be hard pressed to get your website listed with the same ranking as other websites with hundreds of static pages and optimized code.

11. Indexing the same dynamic page might overload the servers of the search engines and therefore prevent the search engines to present with the most relevant information in the fastest possible time.

Here is what Google says about indexing of dynamic websites-

Reasons your site may not be included: Your pages are dynamically generated. We are able to index dynamically generated pages. However, because our web crawler can easily overwhelm and crash sites serving dynamic content, we limit the amount of dynamic pages we index. (Source - Google Webmaster Central)

Here is what Yahoo says about indexing of dynamic websites-

Yahoo! does index dynamic pages, but to discover pages, our web crawler mostly follows static links. We recommend that you avoid using dynamically generated links except in directories that are not intended to be crawled or indexed and for which you have employed robots.txt exclusion.

Here is what MSN - BING says about indexing of dynamic websites-

Long Dynamic URL - Returns URLs from your website that has exceptionally long query strings. Long query strings can create an infinite loop for search engines due to the large number of potential combinations of parameters. Use this report to view the URLs that Bing has flagged as being potentially too long. You can then investigate ways to shorten them.

Quantum Algorithm and Google

As per Wikipedia, " In quantum computing, a quantum algorithm is an algorithm which runs on a realistic model of quantum computation, the most commonly used model being the quantum circuit model of computation. A classical (or non-quantum) algorithm is a finite sequence of instructions, or a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem, where each step or instruction can be performed on a classical computer. Similarly, a quantum algorithm is a step-by-step procedure, where each of the steps can be performed on a quantum computer. Although all classical algorithms can also be performed on a quantum computer, the term quantum algorithm is usually used for those algorithms which seem inherently quantum, or use some essential feature of quantum computation such as quantum superposition or quantum entanglement."

Google has spent the past three years developing a quantum algorithm that can automatically recognize and sort objects from still images or video. Google has been using a quantum computing device created by D-Wave, a Canadian firm. But a lack of information about how D-Wave's chip.

"Unfortunately, it is not easy to demonstrate that a multi-qubit system such as the D-Wave chip indeed exhibits the desired quantum behavior and experimental physicists from various institutions are still in the process of characterizing the chip," wrote Hartmut Neven, head of Google's image recognition team, on the Google research blog.

Hartmut Neven, Technical Lead Manager Image Recognition said, "Many Google services we offer depend on sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning or pattern recognition. If one takes a closer look at such capabilities one realizes that they often require the solution of what mathematicians call hard combinatorial optimization problems. It turns out that solving the hardest of such problems requires server farms so large that they can never be built. A new type of machine, a so-called quantum computer, can help here."

Whatever D-Wave built has apparently worked for Google. Google's image recognition team has previously made its algorithms work for better online image searches and automatic photo organization. Perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised that the Google folk have also delved into quantum computing or at least something much faster than existing classical computing.

Google Caffeine – A new version of Google Search is on its way

Google Caffeine is a fantastic speedy version of Google’s current search engine form. Most of the changes have been server and database related to make the whole process of making a search a much quicker and more pleasurable experience. We are all speed freaks, and Google caffeine will not disappoint us at that point.

In a Google announcement they said that, "Based on the success Google have seen, they believe Caffeine is ready for a larger audience. Soon they will activate Caffeine more widely, beginning with one data center".

On the other hand, Matt Cutts said that Caffeine will not be officially mainstream till the beginning of 2010, until then that one server will enjoy the Caffeine benefits. According to Google's Matt Cutts the all new Caffeine Search Engine has already begun to roll out and is 'now working at 50-percent in the data center.'

Matt Cutts also stated that, “I know that webmasters can get anxious around this time of year, so I wanted to reassure site owners that the full Caffeine roll out will happen after the holidays”.

Google says Caffeine, the next version of its search-engine infrastructure, will soon be available to a wider audience, offering technology designed to deliver faster and more accurate results. Google has provided no specific launch date, but says Caffeine should be fully deployed early in 2010.

Caffeine looks unlikely to alter the familiar look of Google search, but will work in the background, improving the engine's index size, indexing speed and accuracy. Unlike Google's regular updates to its search technology, the new engine represents a significant change in part of the company's search infrastructure.

Caffeine Search is easily the most predictable change on the web. According to many expert statements Google Caffeine is not only faster, but in some instances seems more proficient of producing real-time results.

Google Page Rank Update on October 2009, January 2010

After June 2009, Google has started the PR update process and the changes were reflected in end of October 2009. Google updates the PR at an interval of 3 months or so but this time they took more time. Its coz of Google Google Wave release and then they were also busy in Google Caffeine. Webmaster team is also busy in the upgrading the Webmaster Tool. But this time lot many websites confirming the news that Google has started the process and they will be done by the update by end of October 2009.

When I was checking some of my client sites on October, 2009, I noticed that their PR went up from 1 to 3 and many internal pages have gained PR. So, it is sure that It Google is rolling out a long awaited Page Rank update in this last week of October. The last Page Rank update prior to this one was in June 2009, which may have just been a technical quirk because the one prior to that was just a month before in May.

Page Rank is a very important factor for any blog or website. It shows your site’s social status and power. The problem is that only Google officials know when will be the next update. After all, Google is now the giant in search engine market and no one is near it. So, to answer the original question, most likely there will be a Page Rank Update at the second week of January 2010 may be at Jan 14th, 2010. But if it does not happen then do not blame me because I am no way related to the mighty search engine.

SEO Services – Why Outsourcing

If you have a small budget and you are thinking of doing SEO Services yourself, be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time learning before you act. Properly executed, SEO Services can improve your site for human visitors as well as search engines. If you do have the budget, consider hiring a professional.

For the cost involved, it makes sense to save the time and effort required. By having a SEO Expert handle the work, a business can save time that it can apply to its core competencies. A company should be involved in the project, but it does not need to focus on all of the analysis and implementation. May be you know some aspects of SEO Services, but not all or enough.

A SEO Expert, equipped with the complete knowledge, can offer considerable insights. If a business needs to go to the trouble of training someone or a team, it will take even longer to gain high search engine visibility for competitive keywords. In fact, a SEO Expert brings an enormous amount of perspective by being entrenched in the industry and by working with a wide array of clients.

One of the best reasons for outsourcing SEO Services is to ensure focus. If a business is paying for a service, it should expect consistency, performance and deliverables. A good SEO consultant will stay on track.

Companies, on the other hand, can shift priorities and attention in a flash. If they ask someone to handle the SEO Services, that person could be doomed for many reasons. Employees will favor the tasks that will help them keep their jobs or earn promotions – even if those do not involve SEO Services.

A professional SEO Expert will insist on a clear action plan with planned approval checkpoints. In a general sense, the marketing representatives will not need to be burdened with the actual SEO Services and IT will not need to make actual page changes that the SEO Expert can handle with permission.

Again, consultants should bring in a rich perspective. They have been busy working with many marketers, IT leaders, C level executives and other stakeholders. Excellent SEO consultants will not just know how to handle the technical aspects of the work — they will be excellent communicators who can gain the trust and support of clients.

SEO consultants already know what it takes to succeed. On top of that, they are continually keeping up with search engines and industry trends and standards. They are familiar with the pros and cons of each topic because they are active in forums, keep up with blogs and newsletters, attend conferences, read books, and tune into webinars. In other words, they live and breathe about SEO Services. It is their passion.

Businesses can succeed with in-house SEO Services if they have their team and processes in place. Otherwise, they may fail or lag behind. For the most vital keywords, a business should look at Google and other leading search engines and see who ranks well. High rankings may suggest that other web sites are getting the web site traffic. In other words, many businesses may not know what they are doing, are content with their profitability or just do not see the need to rank well.

Ultimately, the success of a company in natural SEO Services depends on where its ability to develop or hire talent that follows best practices. Otherwise, if the business cares about losing web site traffic to competitors, outsourcing may be a good bet. Different SEO Services and SEO Packages are available and skill levels as well.

Custom CMS based on an open source framework

There are so many choices when it comes to finding the right content management systems (CMS) that it can make your head spin. You can find systems out there that have every feature and are capable of doing anything you want. If your website contains elements including text and images that you would like to change without hiring an expensive website manager then you could greatly benefit from having a custom open source content management system.

If you have never programmed before, you probably don't want to on a project this size. But if you like to program, have some experience with php/perl/asp and a database that will work with your language of choice, then a custom CMS is not that big a project to take on. Do not be intimidated by the size and complexity of the systems that are already out there.

Your clients are a demanding bunch. Customizing a CMS based on an open source CMS can bridge the gap between a pure open source CMS product and a commercial CMS. Some of the Content Management Systems, for example, includes workflow as part of the framework. It may or may not be robust enough for your particular requirement, but it is customizable. Custom CMS can be tailored to the unique requirements of the client.

Content management systems generally have adequate security against hacker attacks. A CMS based site can be set up in relatively little time. Once set up, routine maintenance and updating of content can be performed by someone with little or no technical skill. New functionality can easily be added. Readymade graphics templates are available for purchase or free download for many content management systems. Use of a CMS maintains a consistent layout and appearance on all pages of the site.

Using a Custom, Open Source CMS saves time and impresses your clients by letting them update their own content. Much free support is available via online forums. Even Non technical clients can update it from then on with little or no training. Custom content management system will give you all the tools you need to make changes on your own.

Google Site Links

Google Site links are a collection of links that appears below the result of a website. These additional links link to main pages of the website. They are randomly and automatically chosen by Google's algorithm.

Site links show up most often for searches on brand names.

Which links does Google use for the Site links?

Google seems to use the first level links on a website for the Site links. That means that all links that are not present on the homepage of your site won't be used as Site links.

The links should be descriptive text links or image links with a descriptive IMG ALT attribute. JavaScript or Flash links are not considered for Site links. Google uses 2 to 8 links for the Site links of a website. Unfortunately, it's unclear how Google assigns the number of links to each website.

The text that is used for the Site links can be the texts that are used for the link (anchor text) on the homepage or the title of the linked page. It seems that Google prefers links that appear at the top of a web page.

How can you get Site links for your website?

Unfortunately, there is nothing certain about Google's Site links. The following factors seem to influence whether Google displays Site links or not:

1. Your website must have a stable #1 ranking for the searched keyword. Other websites don't seem to get Site links.

2. Your website must be at least 2 years old. It seems that younger websites don't get Site links.

3. The number of searches and the number of clicks that your website gets for a certain keyword seem to be considered. Keywords that aren't searched often enough don't get Site links. It also seems that your website has to get many clicks for the searched keyword.

4. The numbers of links that point to your website with the searched keyword as the anchor text seem to influence the creation of Site links. Site links only seem to appear for the main keywords of a website, not for all keywords for which a website is listed.

If your website meets these criteria Google might assign Site links to your website for your most important keywords.

Microformat - hcard code - New Techniques that helps for SEO and Small Business

Microformats - hcard code - Microformats are a way of thinking about data, design principles for formats, highly correlated with semantic XHTML, a set of simple open data format standards that a diverse community of individuals and organizations are actively developing and implementing for more/better structured blogging and web microcontent publishing in general and much more. It is a way to write code and markup that a Bot should like and as such have the potential to improve your SE ranking.

Microformat Vs. SEO

A microformat like an hCard offers clear information about your organization such as business name, street address, city, telephone etc. to search engines and other services and tools which support this format. Without hCard format search engines have to rely on complex parsing techniques which increase chances of misinterpretation of your business information. As a business owner you certainly would not like to display incorrect information about your business in search results.

Another advantage of using microformat is that your website may get a rich snippet in the search results (as announced by Google). Rich snippets tend to attract more eyeballs resulting in increased traffic to your site. See the example listing below from Google (rich snippet highlighted with red marker) –

At the time of writing this post Google is displaying rich snippets in SERP for sites using microformat. As the number of microformat adopters reaches critical mass, all search engines and tools that provide data aggregation services will be forced to adopt this standard. Adopting microformat standards now, you will save yourself a lot of tweaking (to conform to microformat standards) in future. Besides, being an early adopter, your business information may already get used in multiple ways by services and tools which support microformats, leading to more publicity for your site.

How to create Microformats

To create microformats for your web pages quickly you can use these online microformat creation tools. To get a clear idea of how microformats are created and look like check out these examples. Additional information (specific to Google) about creating microformats can be found here. Google even has a rich snippet testing tool that will allow you to see how your web page would look like in SERP after implementing microformat.

Top SEO Suggestions to get Good Position on Bing

Here for Bing, we can call it as Decision Engine Optimization rather calling as Search Engine Optimization. Bing respects few of the SEO rules we’re already following while optimizing a website for search engines. The Bing Team highlights that a fusion of good content and proper SEO are the essential elements in website design. So most of the SEO tips what we follow for Google and Yahoo may also work for Bing.

Bing, the Decision Search Engine also appears to give more importance for the Domain Age, like Google. If we purchase older domains, it will acts as a ranking factor in Bing. So make your domain age increase.

Bing gives more importance to text. It really likes pages with more words. Try to put anchor links with your keywords on the content presented in the website title tag. Inbound Anchor Texts matters more.

With Google especially, SEOs are scared to do reciprocal links or to link out to other websites. Coz in most cases Google will reduce the Page Ranking. But Bing supports that kind of linking process.

The most essential factor that influences Google Position Factors is TITLE. Bing gives more & more importance to Title comparing to Google. Be sure the Title is relevant to the subject of the content. If you are failing to follow this tip, the other efforts you put to get good position on Bing, may be lost.

Even though you have a great content and high quality inbound links from authority sites, the structure of your site is much important. If the structure of your site is flawed or broken, then it will not achieve the position you are aiming for.

For a better result in Bing SERPs, is better going with the Twitter. Now, Bing is displaying Twitter results in top positions in its SERPs for a few thousand Twitterers. The Bing results show the latest Tweets of that Twitterer. So, if you are a "power" user in Twitter, you can see yourself in the search results. For ex,

In what ways Bing differs from Google:

While comparing with Google, there is a slight differentiation in Bing On-Site Factors & Off-Page Factors. Anyhow Bing tries for its best to differentiate its Algorithm from Google’s.

Backlinks are of less importance. If you compare the results in Bing and Google, it is noticeable that all equal, the winners in Bing have less backlinks than the winners in Google.

On-page factors matters more in Bing than with Google. This is one of the most controversial points. Many SEO experts disagree but many also think that on-page factors matter more with Bing than with Google.

Bing's algorithm must have some difference from Google's coz the search results are different for the same keywords. SEOs try to figure out what of the known SEO tactics works with Bing.

Let’s see whether Bing will become a real competitor to Google or it will become one more failed attempt to overwhelm Google out of the competition. Also let's see how users react for this new upcoming Search Engine. So for now the best we can do is keep analyzing the Bing.

Use Digg as a SEO tool to get found on Google

Digg is great at getting your website a deluge of traffic from one really popular story but there is a more to submitting your article to digg. Most people never think of using digg as a SEO tool.

Most diggers are let down when their article is not dugg and gets pushed back to the archives of digg. Everyone wants their article to be popular and to get on the front page but is it really beneficial to your site?

The first problem with getting dugg is that your website has to actually stay up and withstand the huge influx of traffic; if you have a Wordpress blog this is nearly impossible and even with Wordpress Caches you will most certainly not be able to withstand the onslaught of traffic.

The other part of the problem is that many websites will be using your digg article verbatim on their website, so generally if Joe’s website has a better page rank than yours and he puts up your article your article now gets to be moved into next rung on Google (and so on) unless most of the people actually refer to your website as the source of the story (backlinks are very important to Google’s Page Ranking).

It’s simple just digg every story no matter how interesting to the Digg crowd. May be that story was not sentilating enough for the digg crowd but it was completely useful to people doing searches on Google. The idea here is not to get an overwhelming amount of traffic but to let the flame burn for a long time over multiple stories. The point is to let your articles stand on its own.

Google Ranking Factors

On page optimization is the process by which various elements on an individual web page are structured so that the web page can be found by the search engines for specific keyword(s) or keyword phrases. On page optimization will not guarantee any top rating within a search engine, only off page optimization can offer that guarantee. However, off page optimization is far more effective WHEN on page optimization is in place.

On-Page Factors:

Titles, Headings
Meta tags
Clean Design
Content - Keywords
File size
Site size
Domain name
Site age
Outgoing links
Bold, italic, underlined words
Internal Linking Factors
Frequency of Content Updating
W3C coding standards
Document Depth, etc.

Off page Optimization is optimization done off the Page, like getting relevant links from other sites, link exchange with quality relevant sites, choosing relevant anchor text from the perfect location on the different pages of different sites etc.

The off-page SEO elements include:

Page Rank
Back links
Link Exchange
Anchor text
Various Submissions
Quantity of Links and Quality of links
Concentration on Analysis and Statistics
